Visiting Hobbitenango, Guatemala

If you’re heading to Antigua, Guatemala, there’s one day trip everyone will tell you about: a Hobbit village in the mountains where you can stand in a giant stone hand and stare out at volcanoes. That place is Hobbitenango, and yes, it’s as whimsical as it sounds.

I visited on a day trip from Antigua, combining Hobbitenango with Altamira and Cerro de la Cruz, and it ended up being one of my favorite days in Guatemala. Between the archery, the photo ops, and breakfast with a volcano view, it fully lived up to the hype.

In this guide, I’m sharing everything you need to know before you go: what Hobbitenango actually is, how to get there (including the private driver route I took), what it costs, what to do when you arrive, and whether it’s worth it. Spoiler: it absolutely is.

What is Hobbitenango?

Hobbitenango is a Lord of the Rings-inspired eco-park tucked into the mountains above Antigua, Guatemala, a real-life Hobbit village built on a hillside at about 8,200 feet. The name gives it away: Hobbit + tenango, a suffix you’ll see all over Guatemala meaning “place of.” Yes, it’s literally the Place of the Hobbits.

What started as a small passion project has grown into one of the most popular day trips from Antigua. The park is dotted with hobbit-hole casitas (round green doors, grass roofs, and a few you can actually sleep in), forest trails, and more than a dozen viewpoints over the Panchoy Valley. On a clear morning, you can spot the Agua, Fuego, Acatenango, and Pacaya volcanoes.

Its most famous resident is El Coloso, a giant stone hand reaching out of the hillside — you’ve probably seen the photo. Add in a giant swing, mini golf, archery, axe throwing, hammocks in the forest, and a restaurant with a view, and you’ve got part theme park, part viewpoint, part Tolkien fever dream. And honestly? It works.

How to get to Hobbitenango?

You can find Hobbitenango official shuttle information here. The office is located in Antigua, Guatemala, at 3a Avenida Nte 20A. It is recommended that you arrive 30 minutes before your scheduled shuttle time, as they do leave on time. Going to the park, the shuttle departs between 8 am and 10 am and again between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. To return, you can take the shuttle between 9 am and 11 am and then again at 1 pm, 3 pm, 5 pm, and 6 pm.

Uber is available to take you up to the parking lot for Hobbitenango, where you will then take the shuttle the rest of the way up. Most people I have talked to said it was easy for them to get a uber there costing about $13usd but getting a return was a little bit harder. Many ended up taking a local cab that cost about $26.

ATV Tours is another option if you are interested. This allows you to drive up to the park, explore, and then head back to the city of Antigua.

Private Driver: This is the route that I took because I wanted to combine Hobbitenango, Altamira, and the slide into one day trip. We paid $140 USD for five of us to have a driver for the day. He took us to each location and waited for us before taking us to Cerro de la Cruz.

Things to see and do at Hobbitenango, Guatemala

There are so many things to do at Hobbitenango that you could spend hours there, and what makes it even better is that all the activities are included in admission.

While at Hobbitenango, I did archery and machete throwing. It was so much harder than it looks, and the wait to participate was really short. After the archery/machete, we did the gigantic hand that you see on any photo dump of Antigua Guatemala. Now, that is a long wait, but there is a cafe nearby for you to grab snacks while you wait. If you are solo, there is someone there who could help you get your photos, but remember you cannot jump on the hand.

This isn’t the only photo opp; there are plenty of places to take photos, including wings, swings, and Hobbit houses.

Back to the activities, you can also do mini golf, a giant swing, and explore the grounds. I decided to pass up the giant swing, but I did watch others do it.

Finally, towards the front, there is a place for you to buy souvenirs for your trip.

Food at Hobbitenango

We had breakfast when we arrived at Hobbitenango.

The food was great, and I would recommend eating there if you are heading there in the morning so you don’t have to schedule your first meal of the day.

Outside of breakfast, you can enjoy other meals there such as buffets, pizza, burgers, and Guatemalan dishes.

Staying at Hobbitenango

Three hobbit-style casitas include a private bathroom, hot shower, fireplace, low dining table, and furnished outdoor patio. They accommodate 2, 4, or 6 guests. Breakfast is included if you stay in one of these. You can book them through this link.

Make sure to book them in advance if you are interested in this option for accommodations.

Is visiting Hobbitenango worth it?

Yes, a Hobbitenango day trip is absolutely worth it and is a must if you are heading to Antigua. I thoroughly enjoyed my time there and the photo ops, food, and archery. If you are heading to Hobbitenango, I would add Altamira, the slide, and Cerro de la Cruz. These make it so you can have a full-day itinerary outside of Antigua.

Things to know before you go to Hobbitenango

Hobbitenango hours are 8 am to 6 pm Monday – Friday and 8 am to 8 pm on Saturdays and Sundays!

I would recommend arriving at 8 am if you want the views all to yourself. At Hobbitenango, you can see the volcanoes: Fuego, Acatenango, and Agua in the morning. In addition, I would pick a weekday over the weekend. Weekends get packed with families, and the line for the giant hand photo spots gets long. A Tuesday morning would feel like a walk in the park.

Hobbitenango tickets are $8 for adults, and kids ages 4 -10 are $6. You can purchase online or at the stand before they take you up.

Keep in mind that the transportation takes you to the parking lot, and then you will take one of their trucks to head down. The ride up is very bumpy; make sure to hold on.

When heading to Hobbitenango, make sure to wear comfortable shoes and layers. I found that when we first got there, it was cold, but as the day continued, things warmed up.
