Jamaica for $150? How to Book a Cheap Trip to Jamaica using Points and Miles!
How to book a cheap trip to Jamaica using Chase Points, Jetblue Miles, and Delta Skymiles!
If you are still considering a trip for the New Year and have points, now is the perfect time to look for a “last minute” vacation. The cash price on many flights is outrageous but if you have been holiday shopping and have earned miles, consider a vacation to bring in the new year!
I recently purchased a trip to Jamaica flight + a hotel for $150!
How to book your flights to Jamaica:
There are so many airlines that fly to Jamaica, so you have a ton of options when purchasing your flights!
I initially booked my flight to Jamaica on Jetblue. To do this I transferred from Chase to Jetblue. I have the Chase Sapphire Preferred, which I love, and I use this for many of my day-to-day purchases. On Jetblue, I purchased a flight for 10,300 miles + $49.60.
This flight not using miles cost $182, making this purchase, 1.29 cost per point. Jeblue averages about 1.3 cost per point.
Of course, after purchasing this flight I decided, I wanted to fly Delta. Since I have the American Express Delta Platinum and knew I would be chasing Delta Gold Status again next year, I decided to cancel my Jetblue Flight and purchase one on Delta Airlines. I did not transfer points for this flight because I have been flying a lot recently and had the miles in my account.
I purchased a flight in Comfort + to Jamaica for 17,000 miles + $49.60. While this flight is more miles, I get drinks and a bigger seat, in addition to, two checked bags included with the purchase. Plus, I can make sure I am earning MQDs to get Delta Status again next year, I want to aim for Platinum but I have been liking my perks with Gold.
This flight if purchased cash is $282. If you do not have a Delta Credit Card, the flight would have been 20,000 miles + $49.60. This purchase becomes 1.37 cpp. Delta averages 1.2. So in my eyes, I did a great job redeeming my miles which many call Skypesos.
Currently, for my return, I am on a return flight with Delta Airlines. Originally, I paid 56,100 miles + $95.74 because the flight was $981. However, it recently went down and I paid 42,500 + $95.74 for my nonstop flight. To book this flight I transferred miles from my American Express Gold. Keep in mind that when transferring from an American Express card, you have to pay a small fee.
I am still looking at a Jetblue Flight at the moment as well, but I want the flight price to drop. I was averaging about 37,100 but now it is at 66,800. The other option would be 55,000 miles but I prefer my Delta Flight because I want to earn the MQDs.
So far I have spent, 59,000 miles and $145.34 on my flights to Jamaica.
How to book your Hotel in Jamaica
The hotel proved to be an interesting search. I knew I wanted an all-inclusive and did not want to spend a ton of cash. I typically reserve cash for excursions on vacations.
I started my search with Hilton, which is interesting cause I do not have that many Hilton points, as of today November 25, 2024, I have 87,411.
The only hotel, I could almost afford on my hotel for all of the nights I would be there was the S Hotel Montego Bay. It was 100,000 points per night for their mini King Suite(Non-Ocean View). For me to afford this I would have paid 87,000 + $1229.01 to use points or not using points would have cost me $1731.66
While I did not book a Hilton Hotel for this vacation I am considering, saving up the points to possibly book a hotel for my London Trip!
I checked Marriott next because there was a 50% transfer bonus between Marriott and Chase which ended on November 15, 2024. I started looking at hotels on the night of the 14th.
The Marriott Hotels were expensive. If I were looking to transfer here, I would have been able to utilize my American Express or Chase accounts to transfer the points. You can also earn Marriott points by linking your Uber Account.
To book the Marriott specifically the Hideaway I would have needed to transfer 122,000 miles and for the Royalton, I would have needed 200,000 miles.
I also checked Hyatt. Hyatt is normally my best bet when it comes to using my points. Their hotels ranged from 35,000 points a night to 77,000 points. I found a Club Level Suite at Secrets with Ocean View for 44,000 points a night. Staying at Secrets will give me access to their other Secrets property, as well as Breathless.
They are all all-inclusive properties!
I transferred points from Chase and Bilt Rewards to cover this stay.
Bilt is an amazing card with no Annual Fee if you pay rent! I have used Bilt Reward points to purchase a flight on Alaska Airlines in the past, as shown in this video, and love that I am earning points on my rent. I did not really need to use Bilt to book with Hyatt, but after transferring points from Chase, I realized I was getting very low on Chase points and wanted to conserve a few! I had used my Chase points, for the Virgin Atlantic transfer bonus, to buy a flight to London for cheap!
So for my hotel, I ended up using 132,000 points. Without points, this hotel cost $2835.00. For this, my cpp was 2.14 and Hyatt points are valued at 1.7
If you want a video example of transferring points from Chase, check this out.
My total for the hotel came out to 191,000 miles and $145.34.
What’s Next + Tips
After using all of these points, I am currently figuring out how I plan to build up my Chase points. I am considering another Chase Business Card, but I am also interested in the elevated offers for the American Express Business Gold. With tax season coming around, I am considering what is my best option for paying my tax bill and beginning to replenish the points and miles. My preference is to replenish Chase, but the elevated offer is very tempting. The Chase business card I am considering, has an offer of 90,000 miles with a spend of $6,000, while the American Express card has an offer of 150,000. I have seen 200,000, once, for a spend of $15,000.
I am really excited to be heading to Jamaica, especially with what I consider a nearly free trip!
