The Best Wine Tasting in Franschhoek, South Africa
Franschhoek Wine Tram
If you are heading to Cape Town, make sure to include Wine Tasting in your Itinerary. South Africa has some of the best wines.
Franschhoek is located about an hour from Cape Town and can be reached via Uber, private transportation, and transportation booked via Franschhoek.
Franschhoek is a town not only known for the wineries but for the amazing hiking, restaurants, and festivals that happen there. So you do not have to limit yourself to a day trip there, you can spend the night in the amazing accommodations so that you can fully engulf yourself in the experience and learn more about the “valley of dreams”
How to get to Franschhoek?
You can arrange transportation through Franschhoek or have an Uber take you there.
When I called an Uber to take me up there, they asked me to pay cash, which I did not mind. They also stayed in the area and waited while I did the tour. If you are taking an Uber, I would highly recommend having them stay in the area because phone service was bad and it would have been a pain to try to get one once our tour was over.
What is the cost of the Wine Tram?
We booked the Hop on Hop Off Experience. After reviewing all of the different lines you can choose from I chose the Burgundy line which cost R560 for two people.
I recently reviewed the website and noticed the line we chose has changed.
What is the dress code for the Wine Tram?
We were there in January and it was hot! I was so happy that I chose to wear shorts and a top instead of something heavy as all of our tastings were outside. Others had on jeans and dresses.
What is the Wine Tram Experience like?
Our trip started at Groot Drakenstein where we met the tram to head to our first stop. On the tram, they provided us with one glass of wine. Once we got to each stop we hopped off the tram and waited for our bus to bring us up to the winery.
At each stop, we choose to stay for one hour. Each stop had a menu that was specific to the hop- on hop- off experience because they were aware of the time limits. They have a few wines for you to sample at each and some light bites that you could purchase to accompany the wine. If you wanted a meal that is something you would have needed to schedule ahead of time, so that the food can be ready for your arrival.
If you are traveling with kids, I would review the different hop-on-hop-off-line options to see which line has kid activities included. According to the website FAQ, these lines are best for kids, Blue | Pink | Red | Orange | Navy.
Keep in mind that pets are not allowed on the tour.
Conclusion
If you do not stay at one of the wineries this is the perfect day trip from Cape Town. You can even bring some of the wines back with you once you find your favorite. Let me know which wineries you head to when you visit!

This sounds like an amazing daytrip – good to know that the uber drivers are willing to hang around the area to back transport back easy.
Looking forward to visiting Cape Town one day, and a wine trip sure sounds like a great idea! So enjoyable and relaxing.
Love Franschoek for the scenery and old buildings, less so for the wine – certainly very decent, and well worth a taste. In terms of location and beauty, I really loved it.
This sounds right up my street haha. How many wineries does the tram stop at?
I haven’t really thought about many African cities to travel to, but this wine tour might just sell me on it, LOL! Gorgeous photos, too!
This is a must do! the wine is amazing!!
You got me at wine tasting. I’m there!
