Curacao Liqueur Distillery Tour at Landhuis Chobolobo Review

Curacao is known for its Blue Curacao liqueur which is made on the island. This Distillery tour at Landhuis Chobolobo guides you through the harvesting and distilling process before you have a taste test of three of the flavors. If you want to go from learning to experiencing the different flavors this is the perfect tour for you. A plus is that to this day, Curacao liqueur is still produced on the island using traditional methods and you are getting an inside look into the process.

How to book the Curacao Distillery tour?

The guided tour for the Curacao Liqueur Distillery can be booked via Viator, here. There are two options for the tour including a standard and deluxe package.

We went with the standard package that includes a tour guide, a tour of the distillery, tasting, and an alcoholic beverage once the tour ends. The cost was $18.00 per person. The deluxe package includes a welcome drink.

Make sure to utilize Rakuten and a card, like Capital One Venture so, you can earn more than 1x points on this purchase.

The Tour + Tasting: Curacao Liqueur Distillery Review

The tour itself was so much fun. You start outside and learn about the history of the liquor. You learn about how explorers bought over Valencia oranges that could not survive in the Curacao soil. They evolved into the Laraha oranges, which are bitter and inedible. Later planters discovered that the dried peels of the Laraha orange could be used to make alcohol after being left out in the sun and going through the distilling process. The process of harvesting the Lahara orange happens twice a year in Curacao, it is still happening to this day!

As you learn about the history, you are guided from outside to inside where you can learn about the distilling process and you can see each step.

The peels are put in a bag, spices are added, and then hung in a still. After it is called, they remove it from the kettle, and water is added. After adding sugar and filtering the mixture, you have clear Curacao. If you are looking to achieve the “Blue Curacao,” food coloring will need to be added before the bottling process begins.

The bottling process talks about the uniqueness and characteristics of the bottle before you head outside for the tasting.

The tasting includes 3 flavors: blue curacao, chocolate, and clear curacao. I did not have a favorite of the three. Once the tasting is over, you can head to the bar area to grab a drink and sit down at one of the picnic tables to relax. You can purchase additional drinks while you wait.

If you booked the cocktail session, it is also outside in the back area with a bartender.

Conclusion: Curacao Distillery Review

Overall, I highly recommend this tour for those interested in learning about the process of how curacao liqueur is made. It is a great mix of history and culture for those who love learning about how their different alcohols are made. I typically always go on a distillery tour when visiting a new island and the Curacao Liqueur Distillery Tour is one not to miss.

  2. I love tours of wineries and breweries, though I have never been to a distillery. Sounds like a really fun tour. I’m curious on what kind of drinks do they make with Blue Curaçao?
